Sessions are selected for general interest, support of remote instruction and learning,  curriculum, student support services, or educational research. Upcoming topics are included below.

What motivates students to persist? How can we translate student experience to school-site practice? Join us and our student panelists as we host a live event that will highlight student experiences with motivation and persistence. We’ll engage our student panelists in a lively and in-depth discussion as they reflect on their experiences navigating their educational and career goals and how these challenges and triumphs connect to counseling support services and classroom instruction.

Preparing Students for Academic, Career, and CASAS STEPS Assessment Success

Every day, teachers are faced with the two-fold challenge of equipping students with the complex skills needed for academic and career success, while simultaneously preparing them to demonstrate Measurable Skill Gains on the new CASAS STEPS assessments. In this session, we will explore how the Burlington Core standards-based curriculum and Prepare for CASAS STEPS Test Practice address these challenges. We will also discuss ways teachers can bring more rigor into their classroom to prepare students for success on CASAS STEPS tests – and in life!

Presenters: Miranda LaBatt has a strong background in education and technology.  She works with Julia Groman to provide strategies and support for school-site personnel.

Differentiating Instruction to Increase Engagement and Outcomes

There are several factors that can impact a student’s learning experience, including the quality of teaching, class size, relationships with peers and teachers, and other everyday factors. However, learning disabilities are often overlooked when considering these factors. How can we address this issue and differentiate instruction to better serve adults with learning disabilities?

Presenters: Martha Martinez and Sandra Lopez are advisors with the Division of Adult and Career Education at LAUSD.

Using Universal Design for Learning and Educational Technology to Increase Engagement, Equity, and Access in Your Classroom

Educational Technology and Universal Design for Learning are natural complements.  Used together, they create equitable and accessible instruction for a variety of learners.  UDL is a framework designed around leveling curriculum so that all students have an opportunity to learn.  Using technology tools to enhance engagement, and representation helps build an equitable platform for learning. Participants will walk away with practical strategies for implementing these ideas in their classroom.

Presenter: Karin de Varennes is a project specialist at the Outreach and Technical Assistance Network (OTAN) with expertise in online teaching and curriculum development.. 

Using Technology to Create an Engaging and Dynamic Classroom

This session will focus on how to use free technology tools and supplementary components from Ventures to bring variety and access to your classroom. Learn practical strategies and ideas to motivate students, improve communication and collaboration and supercharge students’ digital skills.

Presenter: Helen Chade-Mahshi is the ELT sales manager at Cambridge Assessment and has over nine years experience supporting classroom instruction.
